Molly McGinn: Fantastic Day (beta) from Sean Coon on Vimeo.
Last night was Molly’s fourth Tuesday evening playing M’Coul’s Pub in downtown Greensboro, solo, and it was by far the most fun for me to experience.
Not only did the attendance jump tremendously over the last three performances — thanks specifically to Ingrid, Todd (he performed on-stage for the first time in 9 years!) Dara, Amani, Kathy, Ashley and Andy for making it out — but Molly beautifully transitioned from one song to the next, weaving stories behind the music effortlessly into the lyrics of the next song.
And then she improvised.
She fired up GarageBand on her MacBook, which was loaded with a handful of songs she’s been sketching over the last few weeks, and dropped Fantastic Day (the above video). It’s my favorite of her new material, as it’s founded with a hip baseline, lyrics modern to this moment in time and a ton of potential. There’s still work to be done on it, but it was so much fun to experience an artist perform and not be afraid of trying completely new material that’s only partially together.
Oh yeah, another buzz from tonight; I was able to set up the PA system in no time flat (there actually was a mixing board, vocal speaker and monitor in play). That’s big progress for a guy who still can’t setup his home stereo system.
I’m already looking forward to Friday’s show.

I wish I could have been there.
Fantastic! Oh, Molly, you’re so talented!
Swiss Miss!
Thank you Tina. Still iterating that one.
; )
oh it was great being out and listening to the wonderful music! i enjoyed myself. next tuesday i’m gonna try and do what i did yesterday — tuck that baby in, have my sister babysit, and head out to hear some great tunes. loved it!
dara
p.s. i’ve been singing Molly’s songs all day. haven’t been able to play the cd at work :(
but i’m heading home now, and i’m gonna pop it in the cd player in the car :)
i can’t speak for molly, but your enthusiasm gives me goosebumps. it was great to see both you and your sister out last night. we’d love to have you return. thankfully, you have enough sisters for rotating baby duties! ;-)
do me a favor, dara, and let me know if the track names show up automatically when you rip the CD to iTunes. i think we might need to fix that in the next batch we burn..
I can speak for me!
Dara, it was so great to see you there. And I’m going to make a recording of that “You are my sunshine” song for you, and swissmiss.
It meant a lot to see you there, enjoying yourself. I’ll do my damndest to make it happen again.
Until then …..
And yes. Goosebumps. Though I prefer chillbumps.
Oh no! I hate I had to leave early - that’s my favorite!
Sean, no the tracks didn’t show up. had to type them in.
goosebumps/chillbumps, lol! part of that enthusiasm was from me being so happy to finally get out and hear live music (it’s been almost a year)…but i just enjoy great music and i get excited when i find an artist that moves something inside of me…and i definitely needed something to be moved inside me…tough year!
see you guys again soon.
“fantastic day” is my new fave-rave! totally kickass.
the brilliance of molly is her dauntlessness. it is this quality that makes performances such as “fantastic day” an utter and complete success. as judy jetson would say, molly is the “most ut.”
we need dauntless people in the world today to show the sheep how to be less sheepish.
keep on rockin’ it!
