Trent Reznor has been in a fight with the copyright team at Universal over putting up a remix site for his fans to mashup his tunes. Universal’s greatest fear is that people will mix in songs from other artists (and other labels) and that they’d be held liable.
Well, up until last night, the legal monkeys had held him at bay. Today, on his blog, Reznor simply writes:
Sometimes you just have to say… “fuck it.” The remix site is UP! Have fun.
This will be interesting.

I like to reference the Lessig blog of 2005 in relationship to yours. Lessig speech from I-Commons 2007 can also be found in You Tube but the link I have provided reiterates the role Trent Reznor has continued to play from an artists point of view.
I think the “Rebel Without A Cause” motif has a particular resonance in light of Lessig’s call for smart action from those who support what he refers to the “movement”, not himself. Anyway, all I can think here is that while I echo your statement, this will be interesting, the key for me is how art plays its role at all times of momentous change. James Dean’s legacy is all about art being the central definer before a massive sea of change.

great link, syven, thanks. i often wonder about the power of art to elicit change in as decentralized a world as we currently find ourselves… but i guess that all depends on your definition of art in the first place.
the crossed paths of a remix culture and controlled industry will definitely till the soil, though.
Art is everything within a seed of intelligence.
It’s Jiddu Krishnamurti disbanding his group, it is Margaret Wheatley seeing the biological, it is McLuhan hating the global village, it’s Mihalyi Csikszentimihalyi trying to research happiness and flow, it’s Rabbi Shmuley Boteach looking at fear, it is Eric Fromm trying to be and not have, it’s Antonio Damasio merging feelings with reason; and then it’s none of these things because it is the life we experience, it is the smallness of the universe we are in, the beats and puffs we are given, it’s the human condition we are conditioning, it’s the system that we know, it is hearing our own language, it is sensing sense, it is what blows our mind but yet strengthens our heart, it is the reality as reality can be and the reality that isn’t that we take for real.
You have one seed that produced Tag Part 1, Part 11, Part 111 - I see how the world you are discovering and your relationship with social media, I see the dent you want as your ripple, the deadbolt existence that you shall not return to, I see a flowering of man that was before, during and after and that’s cool; and then it’s none of these things because it is the life we experience, it is the existence we serve, and it is whatever you want to the write in the white space, whatever intelligence you want to paint on your canvas, whatever brings this seed of intelligence to your hands and reach to your mission.
Yet all of that Sean is utterly meaningless to me because this ripple belongs to you, this magnet belongs to the environment you wish to create, and the meaninglessness here is an intelligence, it is a freedom that grows, it is a radius of thought, it is a sphere of action, it is a universe of opportunities and so long as this art is within in a seed of intelligence, whatever emanates from it, that is under your care, it is in your stewardship, it is your choice and whatever I say here is simply contamination, for these are things that you must find on your journey, as much as the intelligence I must find in my own.
The only thing I know for sure is that I do have the choice to think and I do have the choice to love and I do have the choice to be free and therefore I arrive down a different root to the same answer as you did in Part 111, that anything is possible…so long as we have that art.
M.
that was poetry in motion. thank you.
Sean, it is what makes the difference between a journey and a journal. I recognize that you respect this and are respectful to it, I also want to thank you for giving me a lot to think about as I make my own personal way forward regarding achieving greater understanding.
